Community Workshop: Sing with Eya

October 12 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Virtual Event
$18 – $95

TICKETED EVENT

Join the women of Eya for an intensive, 6-week workshop of singing, learning, and community.

Throughout this workshop you will learn how to sing the music of Hildegard von Bingen from the original 12th-century notation, learn about Hildegard’s life and musical legacy, and gain a deeper understanding of the interpretation of medieval music.

Our meetings will begin with guided breathing and a reading from Hildegard’s visionary works, and then we will learn and sing several of her pieces over the course of several weeks. We will teach you how to read and sing from the original 12th-century notation, using a modern transcription as a guide.

No prior experience is necessary, and all levels are welcome. Bring your open mind and a willingness to participate.

The Community Workshop meets for six consecutive weeks on Zoom starting on Monday, October 12th. All materials will be provided, and a reading list will be available.

The fee for the Community Workshop is $95 and includes all six meetings. Drop-ins are also available at $18 per meeting.

As part of our larger initiative to celebrate and heal the voices of women, we will feature several films as part of this community event. Over the course of each week, we will screen two films, following our singing, with conversation and dialogue to meaningfully discuss the voices of women, including women of color. See below for more information about our films.

25% of proceeds for this event support programs for women of color in support of justice for Breonna Taylor.

FILMS IN OUR SERIES

(In)Visible Portraits

(In)Visible Portraits, the feature documentary directorial debut from Oge Egbuonu, shatters the too-often invisible otherizing of Black women in America and reclaims the true narrative as told in their own words. The film illuminates the history of how we got here, dismantles the false framework of the present-day reality, celebrates the extraordinary heritage of exceptional Black women, and ignites hope for the next generation.

Vision

Lushly shot in original medieval cloisters of the fairytale-like German countryside, Vision is the profoundly inspirational portrait of Hildegard von Bingen, a woman who has emerged from the shadows of history as a forward-thinking and iconoclastic pioneer of faith, change and enlightenment. Reuniting with recurrent star Barbara Sukowa, New German Cinema auteur Margarethe von Trotta brings the story of this extraordinary figure to cinematic life. In a staggering performance, Sukowa portrays Hildegard’s fierce determination to expand the responsibilities of nuns within the order, even as she fends off outrage from some in the Church over the visions she claims to receive from God. She was truly a woman ahead of her time.
